Chapta 23 |
The sounds of battle carried through the jungle to where Hazug was leading his party around the side of the fort. “There is a
structure ahead my master.” Mayleth said, pointing and Hazug paused to
take a look for himself. Sure enough he could just about make out the
outline of an artificial structure that had long since been covered by
vines. About waist high to Hazug, he could make out no details at all, but
that was not to say that there would not be any concealed beneath the
vines. “Careful dare.” He said, “If dis place was built by humans den dey could ‘ave left some of dare mechanical shootas behind.” “Ah yeah, ay mean dem guns wot shoot at anythin’ wot moves? Yeah, one of dem might just fit inside dat.” Batrug replied and he smiled, “Wouldn’t mind getting’ a look at one of dem.” He added. “So how do we find out?” Sophie asked. “Send da gits master.” Ratish hissed, a wide smile on his face, “Da pansy an’ all.” Drazzok
reached out and slapped Ratish. “’E’s right.” Hazug said in agreement, “Get goin’. I’ll ‘old Cuddles.” “Listen out for a sort whirrin’ sound.” Mek Batrug said to Ratish, “Dat means dat da shoota is turnin’ towards ya.” “Wot should Ratish do if dat ‘appens?” Ratish asked as he began to creep forwards. “Well dat depends on whether da shootas is dakka guns or zappas.” Mek Batrug told him, “If dey is zappas den ya should scream out loud while dey roasts ya insides.” “And if dey is dakka guns?” Ratish asked. “Den ya should scream out loud as dey rips ya arms and legs off.” Drazzok shouted. Ratish continued to creep forwards towards the structure, listening out for the sound of automated guns turning to track him. But all he heard was the sound of orks loudly shovelling their feet as they waited to see if Ratish was shot. “I got two teeth says ‘e gets ‘it by a zappa.” Skrath said to Mek Batrug. “Ya’s on.” Batrug replied. As Ratish got closer to the structure he saw that there were no gun ports and he breathed a sigh of relief before rushing forwards and climbing up onto it. “Master! Ratish made it!” he shouted. “Aww.” Skrath
said as Batrug held out his hand. “Wot can ya see Ratish?” Hazug called out as he began to advance. “Dark.” Ratish replied. “Dark?” Salia commented, “That’s stupid. What does he mean ‘dark’?” “Probably something he doesn’t understand.” Sophie replied. “Look master, dark.” Ratish repeated as the rest of the group gathered around the low structure and he pointed to the gaping hole in the top of the structure where one of the metal grills had collapsed and Hazug smiled. “Oh I know wot’s comin’.” Drazzok said when he saw the look on Hazug’s face and he frowned. “I reckon dis is our way into da fort.” Hazug said. “Yep, I knew it.” Drazzok said, “Can’t just go in through da front door can ya? Wot’s da bleedin’ point in a front door when ya aint gonna use it?” “We needs somewhere to secure a line.” Hazug said, ignoring Drazzok and he looked around at the nearby trees. Spotting one with a thick trunk nearby he approached it and wrapped the end of a length of rope around it before securely tying it in place. Returning to the open vent shaft he tossed the other end down and the sound of it falling echoed back up the shaft, “Okay Ratish, down ya go.” Tucking his pistol into his waistband Ratish took hold of the rope and began to lower himself down into the darkness of the shaft. The heads of the orks all standing there and leaning over to watch him further reduced the limited amount of light that reached the top of the shaft. “Wt’s ‘appenin’ down dare?” Hazug called out, “We can’t see ya any more.” “Ratish is still goin’ down master.” The gretchin called out back up the shaft, “Its too dark to see any more.” Then Ratish felt something solid beneath his feet and he relaxed his grip on the rope to find that he had reached the bottom of the shaft, “Ratish ‘as made it to da bottom master!” he shouted, “But everythin’ is black.” “Does ya ‘ave
a spark maker?” Hazug shouted back down at Ratish. “’Ang on a mo and step back.” Hazug shouted and there was a banging sound that echoed down the shaft as a wooden torch was dropped down to Ratish. Feeling around on the floor where he had heard the torch land Ratish soon found it and lit it before take his first proper look around. He was standing in some sort of barracks, with human style furniture scattered about. But more significantly on the floor lay a crudely made knife that was obviously of greenskin origin and Ratish reached for his pistol. “Ratish!” Hazug shouted down the shaft, “Tell us wot ya can see.” “Git stuff master.” Ratish replied, “But I don’t reckon dat I is dat first one down ‘ere.” “’Ang on.” Hazug shouted, “We is comin’ down.” “Oh great.” Drazzok commented, “Another bleedin’ ‘ole in da ground.” The orks were all capable of climbing down the rope themselves, while Mayleth was able to climb down the shaft without even needing the rope. However, Cuddles could not climb at all and both Salia and Sophie doubted their ability to make the descent unsecured so for them the rope was pulled back up the shaft and tied around them before Hazug and Thuggrim lowered them down the shaft. “Any ideas wot dis place is?” Hazug asked Mek Batrug but the mekboy just shrugged his shoulders. “Apart from where a bunch of gits used to sleep?” he said, “None.” “Pah!” Drazzok snorted, “Da voice of mekboy know-wots. Fat lot of use ya is.” “Okay den, wot does ya reckon dis place is for?” Batrug asked, folding his arms and glaring the weirdboy. “Well, uh.” Drazzok began and then he grinned, “Makin’ monsters. Obvious innit? Da gits made a bunch of monsters and now we is left to deal with ‘em.” “Dat ‘as got to be da most grot brained idea I ‘as ever ‘eard.” Batrug said looking at Hazug. “Never mind dat now.” Hazug said, “We needs to find out where all dem enslavers is. We can worry about wot dis place is for while we divides up da loot afterwards.” The he looked around at Mayleth, “Mayleth with me.” He said, “We is goin’ first. Ratish bring Cuddles and stick behind us. Batrug, keep ya lads at da back and roast anyone wot tries sneakin’ up on us.” With Mayleth beside him Hazug then led the way out of the barracks. He had no clear idea of where he was leading them, but he knew that he would know it when he saw it. |
