Batrug and Gorgoga’s groups went first, with Hazug watching them to make sure that they reached their assigned positions before he took his group towards the ruin that held the mysterious presence that had disturbed Drazzok so much. The ruin looked to have at one time been a hangar and even in its destroyed state the walls were high enough to conceal quite a lot within.

“Stay low.” Hazug whispered and he peered over the wall. Sure enough sat inside the ruined building were about twenty orks from an assortment of clans and armed with various light weapons. These were sat quietly around a truck with an enclosed rear compartment, “Drazzok, take a quick look at dis truck a mo.” He said and the weirdboy also peered over the wall before ducking back down, scowling.

“Dat’s it.” He hissed, “It’s in dare wotever it is.”

“Okay den.” Hazug said, “Let’s get dis started.” And he waved towards the tree lien where Thuggrim and the other madboys waited.

“Boss look!” one of the madboys exclaimed, pointing to Hazug, “Is dat da signal?”

“I dunno.” Thuggrim said, “I tell ya wot, I’ll ask.” And then he took a deep breath and as loud as he could he shouted, “Is dat da signal?”

In the distance he saw Drazzok put his head in his hands, while Hazug continued to wave,

“Well I aint sure.” Thuggrim said, “But I think dat we is supposed to make some noise now. So on three. One. Two. Four. Five. Six. Oh soddit dis is takin’ too long. Now!”

Immediately there was a shrill sound as the madboy with the squigpipes began to do a rather poor impersonation of someone that actually knew how to play them. To accompany this the other madboys formed a line just beyond the edge of the jungle, took deep breaths and began to sing the traditional song of the orks.

“’Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go. ‘Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go. ‘Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go.”

“Light ‘em up!” Batrug shouted and his troops sprang up from behind the sand dune they were using as cover and ignited their flamethrowers. The weapons shrieked as jets of fire shot from the weapons’ muzzles towards the partially built wooden vessel, engulfing not only it but also a number of the gretchin workers in fire.

“Boss look!” one of the burna boys shouted, ceasing fire and pointing to one of the ruined buildings where a group of orks was marching out into the open.

“Well it looks like Hazug’s got ‘is fight now.” Batrug said, aiming his pistol towards the advancing orks and firing at them.

“Waaargh!” Gorgoga bellowed as he leapt over the wall he and his troops were hidden behind and with his troops joining in his war cry the entire unit rushed towards the nearby ruin. The tankbusters hidden in here were clearly taken by surprise and as Gorgoga’s armoured troops charged into their hiding place not one of them had a weapon in their hands.

Gorgoga immediately slammed his fist into the face of the nearest one. Normally the energy field surrounding his power claw would have taken off his opponent’s head, but for this fight he had left the weapon deactivated and so the impact of the bulky metal claw simply sent the ork flying backwards.

Hazug plucked a grenade from his belt and pulled out the pin.

“Fire in da ‘ole!” he shouted, hurling the stick-shaped explosive over the wall. There was the sound of movement as the orks on the other side spotted the grenade as it flew towards them but there was not a single cry of alarm from any of them. Hazug and the others heard the sound of metal on stone as the grenade landed, followed by the dull ‘boom’ as it detonated, “Now! Move!” Hazug yelled and as he leapt over the wall with his rifle in his hands he added, “Waaargh!”

Salia and Sophie were the first to open fire, supporting their lasguns on the wall and firing short bursts over it. None of their shots hit any of the remaining orks, but they did serve to prevent them from firing at Hazug, Mayleth or Ratish as they jumped or climbed over the wall.

“Never mind all dat git shootin’.” Drazzok said to them, “Give us an ‘and in getting’ over dare.”

On the other side of the wall Hazug spotted a belt fed weapon lying next to an ork that had clearly died in the grenade explosion and not far away another ork was reaching for it rather than firing the pistol tucked into his belt. Hazug took aim and snatched the main trigger of his rifle twice. The first bullet missed the ork going for the weapon and sent splinters of stone flying as it struck a chunk of rubble. But the second bullet hit the ork in the chest and he fell backwards before laying a hand on the gun.

Mayleth fired on the move, her splinter pistol sending toxin impregnated slivers of crystal into the ork unfortunate to get in her way. Ratish on the other hand ran after Hazug, firing only occasionally but still managing to put down one ork that was lining up a rifle shot against Hazug.

“No one shoots da master!” he yelled.

Behind them Drazzok landed in a heap as Salia and Sophie effectively pushed him over the wall and there was a clatter as his staff landed beside him.

“Useless gits.” He muttered to himself as he picked up his staff and got back to his feet, “Shoulda left ‘em behind to bake.” Then he reached back over he wall and dragged first Sophie and then Salia over after him, “Now come on. Ya’s ‘ere now so ya may as well make yaselves useful.”

Hazug fired a short burst at an ork who ducked behind the truck. Hazug then dropped the empty magazine from his weapon and reached for a replacement. The hidden ork emerged to take a shot but Ratish reacted quickly and a single pistol shot force the ork to retreat once more.

The orks that emerged from the ruins halted their advance when the first blast of flame was directed at them and took up a position just out of range.
”Soddit!” Mek Batrug exclaimed as he fired his pistol, now the only weapon they had that could reach their opponents, “I told ya to wait till dey was in range.”

To make matters worse more gunfire erupted from another of the ruined buildings, the orks within remaining out of sight as they opened fire and a bullet struck Knurruk and he slumped forwards.

“Get back.” Batrug said, sliding back down the sand dune as more bullets kicked up sand in front of him.

Mayleth kicked an ork in the face as she landed and she felt the rush of his pain. She saw another raise an axe and spun around to face the attack. With a swift movement she slashed at the ork’s wrist to release his grip on the weapon and then drove the blade through his eye.

She was aware that the distance between herself and Hazug had increased and there were several orks between them that Hazug did not seem to have noticed. She fired several shots to ward off the orks closer to her and then set off towards Hazug.

Drazzok simply swung his staff to knock orks out of his way while behind him Salia and Sophie snapped off opportunistic shots at those who tried to counter attack after the weirdboy had past them by.

Ahead of them Hazug had now reached the truck and he used the butt of his rifle to knock the ork using it for cover aside before Ratish shot him. Hazug then reached up for the truck’s large rear hatch and pulled it open to come face to face with his true enemy. From further back all that was visible was the tentacle that lashed out from with the truck. The appendage caught Hazug under his chin with enough force to lift him off his feet and throw him backwards, his rifle flying from his grasp.

“Hazug!” Sophie cried out and she ran towards him.
”Sophie wait!” Salia called out before she ran after her sister.

As the two humans ran they did not see Hazug’s assailant gliding out of the truck behind them. The creature was vaguely spherical, a pulsing mass of flesh that floated in the air seemingly unsupported by any limbs. The sphere extended downwards somewhat at one side, forming what could have been a head of sorts and on this head were a multitude of round, jet black eyes as well as a cluster of short tentacles clustered around what appeared to be its mouth. A single row of bony plates extended upwards form the creature’s head, running over the top of its body and coming to a stop on the far side, but aside from these there was no indication of a skeleton at all. Beneath this mass of flesh hung numerous larger tentacles that did not quite meet the ground. Some of these were tipped in vicious looking barbs and one of these was now coated with Hazug’s blood.

“Oh no ya don’t!” Drazzok snapped as he jumped in front of the alien and brandished his staff in front of him. With the staff lifted clear of the ground Drazzok’s power began to build up inside him and he channelled it into the staff.

The alien turned its gaze to Drazzok, clusters of randomly blinking jet black eyes staring at the weirdboy just as he swung his staff. The alien reacted by lashing out with a barbed tentacle and Drazzok parried this with his staff. As soon as the tentacle and the staff made contact the psychic energy stored in the staff was released. The alien let out a sudden psychic cry and rose up, trying to get out of Drazzok’s reach.

“Get back down ‘ere and take wot’s comin’ to ya, ya big worthless lump!” Drazzok yelled and he swung his staff above his head.

The gunfire continued to strike the dune in front of Batrug and his two surviving burna boys. So far however their opponents had remain reluctant to charge and finish them off, obviously aware that rushing over the top of the dune would expose them to attack from the flamethrowers at point blank range.

Then came another burst of gunfire from the other direction and for a moment Batrug assumed that their enemies had been able to get around behind them. But when he looked around he saw nothing. Until that was he looked upwards and saw the three warcopters flying along the beach and strafing the orks lying prone out in the open.

The gunfire from the ruins that had been directed at Batrug’s unit stopped. The orks shooting at them had not ceased fire though, they had merely redirected their fire and right now they were doing their best to bring down the warcopters. However, orks were poor marksmen and had enough trouble hitting slow moving ground targets so the warcopters were in little danger from the random firing.

“Hazug are you okay?” Sophie asked.
”Uh, yeah. Sure.” Hazug replied as he got back to his feet, “Where’s me shoota?” then he caught sight of Drazzok still attempting to land a blow on the hovering alien, “Never mind.” Hazug said and he unslung the warscythe from his back before charging the alien.

Both Mayleth and Ratish fired at the alien, striking its bulky body. Unsurprisingly the bullets from Ratish’s pistol did nothing, his weapon lacking the stopping power necessary to bring down a target of this size. But what Hazug did find odd was that the toxins covering the crystal shards also had no effect despite their effectiveness on the resilient orks.

“Just focus on da lads!” Hazug shouted, “Me and Drazzok’ll take dis thing.”

“Well we will if it come back down ‘ere to get ‘it.” Drazzok added, snarling.

“Just zap it!” Hazug yelled at Drazzok and Drazzok stood still, an evil grin appearing on his face as he held his staff above him and took a deep breath. A brilliant green glow appeared in his eyes and all of a sudden twin lightning bolts of the same colour erupted from them, striking the alien and cascading over its body.

The alien let out another psychic yell and all of a sudden every one of the orks serving it dropped to their knees, their hands clamped over their ears as if they were trying to silence the cry. Mayleth came to a sudden halt as well, gasping. The pain the orks were suffering was so intense and coming from so many places at once that she was not used to it.

Hazug leapt as he ran and reached out with one hand, grabbing hold of one of the alien’s tentacles. As he came back down he dragged the alien down with him and he thrust the warscythe upwards into the centre of the alien’s bloated body. Even without the powerful energy field active the tip of the blade was able to slice into the creature’s flesh. Hazug pushed harder, forcing more of the weapon into the alien and he twisted it to tear through the tissue inside in the hope that he would hit something vital. The alien let out one last sudden psychic cry and suddenly fell out of the air, knocking Hazug backwards and all of a sudden the orks shooting at Hazug’s party ceased their attacks.
